Triscuits

June 15, 2008

I wouldn’t know about Thor and any “cat burglar”…I choose only to pay attention to cats that are upright and noble (Like Koko and Yum Yum and, on his good days, Felix).  I prefer my felines to solve mysteries, not perpetrate them.

Anthropomorphic shenanigans, eh?  I’m up for it…sound like it could be a wild ride (pause for laughter).  If you really enjoy anthropomorphism feel free to imagine me as a rhinosceros as I type this–of course I’m typing with my horn because my block-hooved hands(or hooves) were not intended for the qwerty key pad.

But let’s not leave Emma and the gang quite yet…we still have a third of the book to go.  And book three starts off with a bang no?…Chapter 2 and that notorious carriage ride.  I was scandalized!  In your translation did they mention who was doing the shouting (“Keep driving!”).  In the translation I’m reading they were very coy about it.  I wonder why that is…why didn’t Flaubert specify who was speaking?

That’s just one of many questions that I ponder after I place my bookmark on my page and shut Madame Bovary.

Here are some others:

  1. Could Emma ever be really happy with anyone?  She seems like a constant “Grass is always greener” discontent to me…is there someone out there who would be her perfect match, that could satisfy her in every way?
  2. If Madame Bovary were an anthropomorphic funfest what type of animal would each character be?  According to the back of my book Charles has an “oxlike” devotion to Emma…so that’s one done.  But what would Emma be?  A gazelle?
  3. If Emma were on The Mole this season would Liz have been “executed” in the last episode or would Emma have completely thrown the season’s dynamic and would another player be gone instead?

Please feel free to consider this a little twin-given essay test and provide me with answers at your leisure (but I will expect each answer to be well structured, have a thesis and supporting evidence).  Also if anyone stumbles upon this on the Internet, please feel free to use this as a kickstart for any book-clubbing you may be doing (your welcome)

Also on a completely unrelated note…I just realized that for the past three nights a large portion of my supper has included Triscuits.  The thing with Triscuits is that they’re delicious.  And you start eating them and they’re so delicious that you just keep wanting more.  But even when you put them away because you realize you’re going to ruin your appetite for supper it’s too late, because besides being delicious, Triscuits are also really filling.

Um, so that was a tangent.  I best sign off before I regale you with my ponderings on Wheat Thins (spoiler:  They’re no Triscuit!)
