The Halflife of Humor

April 17, 2008

Well I started Book, the Sixth this morning and it appears to be a drastic improvement to its counterpart in slot five.

While reading an early chapter in Book 6, (Chapter III, to be exact), in the double entendre-rife interchange between Susannah and Dr. Slop, I got  to thinking about humor’s shelflife.  I imagine this scene was once considered quite ribald and hilarious, but as I read it now I barely got the joke (would have completely missed it, I think, if I hadn’t already discussed lurid candle imagery in the poems of John Donne back at Grinnell).

It’s weird, no, that some things age and become less funny (this chapter, puppies) while some things are timelessly hilarious (The Golden Girls, the image of you with curry all over your face).

Just something to ponder.

Another ponder point (I just made that up..all rights reserved)…what does it say about me that I found a chapter in Tristram Shandy steamy?

Pondering still,

Jon
